INTRODUCTION

Agriculture remains the backbone of the Indian economy, supporting the livelihoods of millions of farmers and ensuring the nation's food security. Recognizing the need to improve productivity and strengthen rural prosperity, the Government of India introduced the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY). Approved by the Union Cabinet on 16 July 2025 and formally launched on 11 October 2025, the scheme aims to transform agriculture in 100 low-performing agricultural districts across the country through a focused, district-based development approach. The scheme will be implemented over six years (2025–26 to 2030–31) with an annual outlay of ₹24,000 crore.

OBJECTIVES

The scheme focuses on five major objectives:

  1. Enhancing agricultural productivity.
  2. Promoting crop diversification and sustainable farming practices.
  3. Expanding post-harvest storage facilities at Panchayat and Block levels.
  4. Improving irrigation infrastructure and water-use efficiency.
  5. Ensuring better access to both short-term and long-term agricultural credit

The scheme is expected to directly benefit around 1.7 crore farmers across the selected districts. District-specific Agricultural Development Plans will be prepared based on local needs, ensuring that interventions are tailored to the region's climatic conditions, cropping patterns, and infrastructure gaps. Progress will be monitored using a comprehensive set of performance indicators through a digital dashboard.

SELECTION OF DISTRICTS CRITERIA

The 100 districts are selected based on objective criteria such as:
Low agricultural productivity.
Moderate crop intensity.redit availability.
At least one district from every State and Union Territory is included to ensure balanced regional development.

BENEFITS

The scheme is expected to generate significant improvements in India's agricultural ecosystem by:

  1. Increasing crop yields and farmBelow-average agricultural c incomes.
  2. Encouraging diversification towards high-value crops.
  3. Promoting climate-resilient and sustainable farming practices.
  4. Reducing post-harvest losses through better storage infrastructure.
  5. Improving irrigation coverage and efficient water management.
  6. Enhancing farmers' access to institutional credit.
  7. Creating employment opportunities in agriculture and allied sectors.

These interventions collectively aim to make Indian agriculture more productive, resilient, and market-oriented.It also supports national priorities such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural economic growth.

CHALLENGES

Despite its ambitious design, successful implementation will depend on:

  • Strong coordination among ministries and state governments.
  • Timely release and efficient utilization of funds.
  • Capacity building of local institutions.
  • Regular monitoring and transparent evaluation.
  • Active participation of farmers and local communities.
  • Addressing these challenges will be crucial for achiVESeving the scheme's intended outcomes.

CONCLUSION

The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana is a landmark initiative that has the potential to reshape India's agricultural landscape. Through targeted investments, integrated planning, and a district-centric approach, the scheme aims to improve productivity, strengthen rural infrastructure, promote sustainable farming, and enhance farmers' incomes. If implemented effectively, PMDDKY can play a vital role in building a more resilient, competitive, and prosperous agricultural sector for India.
