HOW TO CALCULATE HONEY YIELD IN BEEKEEPING ???
Beekeeping, also known as apiculture, is an important agricultural and allied activity that offers farmers an opportunity to generate additional income from relatively small land requirements. Honey bees provide valuable products such as honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen, and bee colonies, while their pollination activity can significantly benefit agricultural and horticultural crops.
In India, beekeeping is becoming increasingly popular among farmers, rural entrepreneurs, and self-help groups because it can be integrated with existing farming activities. Species such as Apis mellifera and Apis cerana indica are commonly managed for honey production and pollination.

How to Calculate Honey Yield in Beekeeping
Honey yield is generally calculated by measuring the quantity of harvestable honey obtained from each colony over a specific period. For commercial beekeeping, it is useful to calculate yield per colony, per harvest, and per year.
1. Basic Formula
Honey Yield per Colony = Total Honey Harvested ÷ Number of Productive Colonies
For example:
- Number of productive colonies = 100
- Total honey harvested = 3,000 kg
Honey yield per colony = 3,000 ÷ 100 = 30 kg/colony/year
So, the average honey yield is 30 kg per colony per year.
2. Calculate Total Honey Production
If you know the average yield per colony:
Total Honey Production = Number of Colonies × Average Honey Yield per Colony
For example:
- 100 colonies
- Average yield = 30 kg/colony/year
100 × 30 = 3,000 kg
Therefore, expected annual production is 3,000 kg of honey.
3. Calculating Yield from Individual Harvests
Commercial beekeepers often harvest honey several times during the year.

For example:
| Harvest | Honey Harvested |
|---|---|
| Mustard season | 900 kg |
| Litchi season | 700 kg |
| Eucalyptus season | 600 kg |
| Sunflower season | 500 kg |
| Other flowering sources | 300 kg |
| Total | 3,000 kg |
If you have 100 productive colonies:
Annual yield = 3,000 ÷ 100 = 30 kg/colony/year
4. Calculate Honey Yield Per Hive
If you harvest honey from individual hives, you can calculate:
Yield per Hive = Honey harvested from the hive ÷ Number of harvests
For example, a colony produces:
- First harvest = 8 kg
- Second harvest = 7 kg
- Third harvest = 10 kg
- Fourth harvest = 5 kg
Total = 30 kg/colony/year

Most Useful Formula for Farmers
You can remember these four formulas:
① Honey Yield/Colony
Total honey harvested ÷ Productive colonies
② Total Honey Production
Number of productive colonies × Average yield/colony
③ Gross Honey Income
Total honey production × Selling price/kg
④ Net Income
Gross income − Total production & operating expenses
