BEST MANAGEMENT OF MITES IN CHILLI
Share
Introduction
Mites are tiny pests that can cause big problems for chilli plants. These small creatures feed on the sap of chilli leaves, leaving behind marks that can lead to discoloration and even leaf loss. They thrive in warm, dry conditions, making chilli plants especially vulnerable during hot weather.
Symptoms
Mites will leave small and light dots on the chilli leaves. Leaves turn yellow or bronze and curl. Some affected leaves gets a shiny look and fall off too soon. Ultimately plant growth is slows.
Preventive measures
Planting crops like maize, or sorghum alongside helps by providing shade that reduces thrips growth.Bordering fields with 2-3 rows of crops such as sorghum or maize can block thrips from moving in from nearby fields.
Marigolds planted between fields can serve as trap crops, helping to reduce thrips damage.
Avoid planting chili immediately after sorghum to minimize thrips infestation.
Sprinkling water on seedlings during watering helps to control thrips by reducing their numbers.
Chemcial control
Alanto is the insecticide which belongs to the class neonicotinoid. Thiacloprid 21.7% SC will provide the systemic protection to plants through its absorption from plant and transformed through the plant tissue, by protecting against pests. It is stable even under the heavy rains and sunlight providing longer persistence due to its rain fastness property. The recommended dosage is 200ml/acre.
EM 1 Insecticide contains Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG, part of the Avermectin group known for insect control. It effectively combats pests through contact and stomach poison effects, and its translaminar action targets thrips under leaves. Its low residue makes it compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. For one acre,80 grams of EM1 insecticide is adequate.
Keefun Insecticide formulated with 15% EC Tolfenpyrad, is highly effective against sucking pests like thrips. Its broad-spectrum action includes an anti-feeding mechanism that halts feeding upon contact, ensuring comprehensive protection across various pest life stages. To use, mix 1.5 to 2 ml of the insecticide per liter of water and apply as a spray on crops.
Omite Insecticide containing 57% EC Propargite, is a highly effective miticide used in agriculture. It works on mites through direct contact, residual action, and vapor action within dense crop canopies. Omite disrupts mite enzyme systems, affecting their metabolism, respiration, and nervous system functions. It remains effective even after rain, making it suitable for year-round use and as a reliable treatment, particularly late in the season. The recommended dosage is 600ml/acre.
