What Is a Soil Test?
A soil test is a laboratory analysis of a soil sample to determine its fertility, nutrient status, pH, salinity, and other important properties.
What Does a Soil Test Check?
A typical agricultural soil test may measure:
- pH – whether the soil is acidic or alkaline
- EC (Electrical Conductivity) – indicates soluble salt levels
- Organic Carbon – gives an indication of soil organic matter
- Nitrogen (N) – supports leaf and vegetative growth
- Phosphorus (P) – supports root and reproductive development
- Potassium (K) – supports plant strength and overall crop performance
- Sulphur (S) – important for protein formation
- Micronutrients – such as Zinc, Iron, Boron, Copper and Manganese
HOW TO DO SOIL TEST ?
Soil testing is the process of collecting a soil sample and analyzing it to determine its physical and chemical properties, such as pH, nutrient levels, organic matter, salinity, and texture.
Step 1: Collect Soil Samples
- Divide the field or garden into areas that have similar soil and crop history.
- Remove surface debris (leaves, grass, stones).
- Using a soil auger, probe, or spade, collect soil from several spots:
- Cropland: 15–20 cm (6–8 in) deep
- Lawns/gardens: 10–15 cm (4–6 in) deep
- Take 10–15 subsamples from each area.
- Mix them thoroughly in a clean bucket.
- Take about 500 g (1 lb) of the mixed soil as the representative sample.
Step 2: Prepare the Sample
- Spread the soil on clean paper and air-dry it.
- Remove roots, stones, and other debris.
- Place the dried soil in a labeled bag.
Step 3: Laboratory Testing
Send the sample to a soil testing laboratory. Common analyses include:

Simple Home Tests
You can also perform basic tests at home:
- pH test kit for soil acidity.
- Jar test for soil texture (sand, silt, clay).
- Drainage test by filling a hole with water and measuring how quickly it drains.
Correct Depth for Soil Sampling
The required depth depends on the crop and purpose of testing.

⭐ For routine fertilizer recommendations
For most agricultural crops, 0–15 cm depth is the standard starting point.
For orchards and deep-rooted crops, collecting samples from different soil layers can provide much more useful information.
