How to Apply Water-Soluble Fertilizer

Water-soluble fertilizers (WSF) are fertilizers that dissolve completely in water and can be applied either through drip/fertigation or as a foliar spray. They provide nutrients quickly and are commonly used for vegetables, fruits, flowers and field crops.

1.Through Drip Irrigation (Fertigation)

This is one of the most efficient methods.

Steps:

  1. Select the water-soluble fertilizer according to the crop and nutrient requirement.
  2. Calculate the required fertilizer dose for the area.
  3. Dissolve the fertilizer completely in clean water in a separate tank/bucket.
  4. Filter the solution if necessary to prevent clogging.
  5. Inject the solution into the drip irrigation system.
  6. Run plain water through the system before and after fertigation to distribute the fertilizer and clean the lines.

Example:
If the recommended dose is 5 kg fertilizer/acre, dissolve the required quantity in sufficient water and apply it through the fertigation system according to the crop schedule.

2.Foliar Spray

Water-soluble fertilizers can also be sprayed directly on leaves when the product label recommends foliar application.

Steps:

  • Measure the recommended quantity of fertilizer.
  • Dissolve it thoroughly in clean water.
  • Filter the solution before filling the sprayer.
  • Spray uniformly over the foliage.
  • Prefer spraying during the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Avoid spraying during very hot weather, strong sunlight or when rain is expected.

Important Precautions

  • Always follow the fertilizer label or crop-specific recommendation for dosage.
  • Do not increase the concentration thinking it will give faster results; excessive concentration can cause leaf burn or fertilizer injury.
  • Do not mix different fertilizers or pesticides unless their compatibility is confirmed.
  • Some fertilizers containing calcium should not be mixed in concentrated stock solutions with phosphate- or sulfate-containing fertilizers, because precipitation can occur.
  • Use clean water and clean fertigation equipment.
  • Store fertilizers in a dry place away from moisture.
  • Adjust the application according to crop stage, soil condition, irrigation method and nutrient deficiency.

4. Best Application Method

Method Main advantage Suitable for
Drip/Fertigation Efficient root-zone nutrient delivery Vegetables, fruits, flowers, protected cultivation
Foliar spray Rapid nutrient absorption through leaves Micronutrients and corrective feeding
Soil application Nutrients supplied to root zone Crops where soil application is recommended

Simple Formula for Preparing a Spray

If the recommendation is 1 g/L:

Required fertilizer = Water volume × Dose

For 15 litres of water:

15 × 1 = 15 g fertilizer

So, dissolve 15 g fertilizer in 15 litres of water.
