FARMIRICH COMPOST TEA OR VERMI WASH

FARMIRICH COMPOST TEA OR VERMI WASH

FARMIRICH COMPOST TEA OR VERMI WASH

Vermiwash, also commonly referred to as vermicompost tea or compost tea, is a liquid organic plant-growth and soil-supporting preparation made by extracting soluble nutrients, organic compounds and beneficial microbial populations from vermicompost or compost into water. Vermicompost itself is produced when earthworms, commonly Eisenia fetida, process decomposing organic materials and convert them into nutrient-rich castings.

🌱 What Is Vermiwash?

Vermiwash contains water-soluble nutrients and organic substances released from vermicompost. Depending on the raw materials and preparation method, it may contain:

  • Small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
  • Secondary nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and sulphur
  • Micronutrients including iron, zinc, manganese and copper
  • Dissolved organic compounds
  • Humic and fulvic substances
  • Beneficial microorganisms, particularly when prepared and handled appropriately
  • Plant-growth-supporting compounds produced during decomposition and biological activity

Because concentrations can vary significantly, vermiwash should generally be considered a supplementary organic input, rather than a complete replacement for a balanced fertilizer program.

.

🪱 How Vermiwash Is Produced

Step 1: Organic Material Selection

Organic materials such as crop residues, vegetable waste, farmyard manure and other suitable biodegradable materials are used to prepare vermicompost.

Step 2: Vermicomposting

Earthworms such as Eisenia fetida consume and process partially decomposed organic matter. Their activity, together with microorganisms, converts the material into stable vermicompost.

Step 3: Liquid Extraction

Water is passed through or mixed with mature vermicompost so that soluble nutrients and organic compounds enter the water.

Step 4: Collection

The resulting liquid is collected, filtered if necessary, and stored in a clean container.

Step 5: Dilution Before Application

Depending on the product and preparation method, vermiwash may need to be diluted before application to plants or soil. The manufacturer's recommended dilution should always be followed for commercial products.

🌿 Benefits of Vermiwash

1. Provides Supplementary Nutrients

Vermiwash can supply small quantities of soluble nutrients and micronutrients that support plant development.

2. Supports Plant Growth

Organic compounds present in well-prepared vermicompost extracts may support root development, vegetative growth and overall plant vigour.

3. Supports Beneficial Microbial Activity

When properly prepared, vermiwash can contain microorganisms associated with compost and vermicompost. These organisms can contribute to biological activity around the plant and soil.

4. Improves Nutrient Availability

Organic compounds in the extract may help make certain nutrients more available to plants and support nutrient cycling in the soil.

5. Supports Root Development

When used appropriately, organic extracts can contribute to a biologically active root-zone environment, supporting healthy root growth.

6. Helps Improve Soil Biological Activity

Regular incorporation of quality organic inputs can support soil microorganisms and contribute to healthier soil biological processes.

7. Useful as a Foliar Application

After appropriate filtration and dilution, some vermicompost extracts can be applied to foliage as a supplementary organic input.

8. Suitable for Sustainable Agriculture

Vermiwash makes use of organic materials and fits well into organic farming, natural farming and integrated nutrient-management systems.

What Does Vermiwash Contain?

The composition is not fixed and depends on the feedstock, maturity of vermicompost, earthworm species, water quality and extraction method.

It may contain:

Component Role
Nitrogen Supports vegetative growth
Phosphorus Supports root and reproductive development
Potassium Supports overall plant strength and physiological processes
Calcium Supports cell structure
Magnesium Important for chlorophyll formation
Sulphur Supports protein and enzyme functions
Micronutrients Support various plant metabolic processes
Humic substances Support soil and nutrient-management processes
Organic compounds Contribute to biological activity
Microorganisms May support biological processes when the preparation is microbiologically active
