El Niño Effects on Horticulture & Agricultural Crops
जोड़ना
What Does El Niño Mean?
El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon in which the surface water of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than normal.
This warming can change wind patterns, rainfall and temperatures in many parts of the world, including India.
In simple words:
El Niño = Unusual warming of Pacific Ocean water → Changes in weather → Changes in rainfall and temperature.
Effect on India
During some El Niño events, India can experience:
- 🌧️ Below-normal or irregular monsoon rainfall
- 🌡️ Higher temperatures
- 💧 Drought or water shortages
- 🌾 Moisture stress in agricultural crops
- 🍅 Lower flowering, fruit set and yield in some horticultural crops
El Niño Effects on Horticulture & Agricultural Crops
Effects on Agricultural Crops
| Crop | Possible El Niño Effects |
|---|---|
| Rice/Paddy | Reduced rainfall can affect transplanting, tillering and grain filling |
| Maize | Moisture stress can reduce plant growth and grain yield |
| Cotton | Poor rainfall may reduce vegetative growth and boll development |
| Groundnut | Drought stress can affect pegging and pod development |
| Pulses | Moisture shortage may reduce flowering and pod formation |
| Wheat | Higher temperatures can shorten grain-filling duration |
| Sugarcane | Water stress can reduce cane growth and sugar accumulation |
| Sorghum/Millets | Prolonged moisture stress can reduce yield |
Effects on Horticultural Crops
Vegetables
- Tomato, chilli, capsicum and other vegetables may experience poor flowering and fruit set.
- High temperatures can cause flower drop and sunscald.
- Water stress may result in smaller fruits and lower quality.
Fruit Crops
- Mango: abnormal flowering, flower drop and reduced fruit set may occur under unfavorable temperature/moisture conditions.
- Citrus: water stress can reduce fruit size and quality.
- Banana: inadequate water can reduce bunch size and fruit development.
- Papaya: heat and moisture stress can affect flowering and fruit development.
Plantation & Commercial Crops
- Coconut, arecanut, coffee and other perennial crops can suffer from prolonged moisture stress.
- Young plants are particularly vulnerable to heat and drought.
Major Problems Caused by El Niño
Less rainfall → Water shortage → Soil moisture stress → Poor crop growth → Reduced flowering/fruit set → Lower yield & quality
Other possible impacts include:
- Increased irrigation requirement
- Higher evapotranspiration
- Heat stress
- Flower and fruit drop
- Greater pest pressure in some situations
- Higher production costs
- Delayed sowing or transplanting
- Reduced availability of fodder and water
How Farmers Can Manage El Niño Conditions
- Conserve soil moisture using mulching and residue management.
- Use drip irrigation wherever feasible.
- Follow rainwater harvesting and farm ponds.
- Choose drought/heat-tolerant varieties suitable for the region.
- Adjust sowing dates according to local rainfall forecasts.
- Use balanced fertilization and avoid excessive nitrogen during moisture stress.
- Provide shade/protection for sensitive horticultural crops during extreme heat.
- Maintain proper weed control, because weeds compete for scarce water.
- Monitor crops regularly for pests and diseases.
- Follow advisories from the local agricultural/horticultural department and weather services.
